An au pair is a young adult aged between 18 and 25, often from another country, who lives with the host family and helps with childcare and sometimes light housework. Being an au pair is based on a cultural exchange program, and this is facilitated in various ways by the host family:
Since the au pair becomes an integral member of the host family, this leads to a rich exchange of cultures. The au pair gets to know your culture and you in turn learn about the au pair's background. This mutual acquaintance often forms a lifelong bond.
- Your children will experience the benefit of growing up bilingual and understand what it is like to live with someone from a different cultural background with unique customs and norms. The au pair, in turn, gets the chance to familiarize herself with a new language and culture, live within a different family dynamic and delve deeper into Dutch history.
- You offer the au pair the opportunity to enroll in a (language) course.
- Super Nanny Au Pair Services offers opportunities for au pairs to connect with their peers.
- A cultural program for the au pairs associated with Super Nanny Au Pair Services is organized quarterly. We put together a varied cultural program. Events range from the Ice Skating Cool Event, Efteling, Traditional Dutch Games & BBQ event to the celebration of Sinterklaas. There is also an optional Beach Event. General Requirements for Host Families
- The family must consist of at least 2 persons.
- The family must be financially able to support the au pair.
- The family must be lawfully residing in the Netherlands.
- The au pair has not worked for the family before (including outside the Netherlands).
Enrollment and Residence
- The host family is registered in the Dutch Basic Registration of Persons (BRP).
- The au pair lives at the same address and is also registered there.
Working Arrangements and Day Work.
- There must be a daily schedule for all seven days of the week, signed by both parties.
Working conditions
- The au pair may work a maximum of 30 hours per week, divided into 5 days and a maximum of 8 hours per day.
- The pocket money for the au pair is between €300 and €340 per month.
Leisure and Vacation
- The au pair is entitled to 2 days off per week and at least one consecutive weekend per month.
- A minimum of 2 weeks of paid vacation for a 12-month stay.
Accommodation and Facilities
- The host family offers a self-contained room of at least 12m².
- A bicycle and a prepaid cell phone will be provided by the host family.
Insurance and Visa
- The host family is responsible for proper visa papers and au pair insurance.
Language Course and Return
- The au pair has the opportunity to take a Dutch language course.
- The return ticket is paid for by the host family.
Financial Requirements
- The family must have sufficient income to meet financial obligations.
Return ticket and travel arrangements
- Super Nanny Au Pair Services will take care of the travel of the au pair to the Netherlands for the host family. This will basically be a return ticket. Details will be explained in a personal interview. A return ticket is valid for a maximum of 12 months.
Compulsory Insurance
- A Joho health insurance and liability insurance (ISIS au pair insurance) should be taken out before the au pair's departure.
- There are two types of insurance available:
- Isis au pair world plus, 12 months € 540, (recommended)
- Isis au pair world, 12 months € 444
Other Commitments and Support
- In case of serious illness or death of close relatives of the au pair, the ISIS emergency center will assist.
- Further information on obtaining basic health insurance and applying for health care benefits is provided by our insurance partner JoHo Insurances.

If the au pair has a foreign driver's license, they can use it for a certain period of time. How long depends on the country where the license was issued. After this period expires, they should be in possession of a Dutch driving license. Either by exchanging foreign driving license for a Dutch driving license or retaking the driving test. The host family must have an income that is at least the legal minimum wage to support their own family situation supplemented by 50% of the legal minimum wage for married couples and unmarried cohabitants. The total income requirement is then as follows:

No an au pair may only live with her host family. It is not possible for an au pair to live somewhere else and help you at home. Not even if the parents are divorced with shared custody.

No, an au pair is entitled to a private room which they must be able to lock. The room should not be used as a passage for members of the family to another room. The room must have at least one window that allows natural light to pass through. Also, the room must have heating, lighting, a bed, closet space, a desk, a chair, TV and an Internet connection.

Yes, since 2013 it is mandatory to apply for your au pair application through an agency recognized by the IND (referent). The IND has the obligation to protect the position of the au pair, who is based in the Netherlands. This seems contrary to EU rules for ' free movement of goods and services. "But the au pair program falls outside these regulations, this falls under 'cultural exchange'. The labor and immigration authorities may come to check on host families' homes. If there is no involvement of an au pair agency, then there is a working relationship with the au pair. This falls under small domestic workers. Prior to the current legislation, there have been court cases in which host families have been fined.

Yes, the au pair, with a stay of one year, is entitled to 2 weeks of paid vacation. This vacation will be planned in consultation with the au pair and the host family. It is not necessarily the case that only you decide when the 2 weeks paid vacation will take place, the au pair also has a voice in this.

The legislation in the Netherlands is very clear; an au pair may not exceed 30 hours per week, spread over 5 days per week and may help in the family for a maximum of 8 hours per day. An au pair is entitled to 2 vacation days per week and consecutive one weekend per month. As a recognized agency, for all families, we are held responsible by the IND to comply with the regulations for an au pair.
